Press Release

***************************************************************

Internationally acclaimed media artist John Maeda, Director of the MIT

Media Laboratory, discusses "Art in the 21st Century - Design by Numbers"

at Cambridge Forum, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 5, at First Parish, 3

Church Street, Harvard Square, in Cambridge. This special forum also

features guest moderator Claudia Dreifus, interviewer for The New York

Times Science Section, and author of the newly released "Scientific

Conversations. "

The burgeoning computer technologies have given artists another powerful

tool to create their distinctive visions. John Maeda has been a pioneering

force in bringing these technologies to the design and arts communities.

Under Maeda's leadership, the Aesthetics & Computation Group (ACG) has

created award-winning designs, acclaimed for their uniqueness and craft,

while offering workshops and events that introduce the underlying concepts

of computing technology to working artists. His mission is to foster the

growth of what Maeda calls "humanist technologists" - people who are

capable of articulating future culture through informed understanding of

the technologies they use.

In addition to his position at MIT's Media Laboratory, John Maeda is also

Sony Career Development Professor of Media Arts and Sciences, Associate

Professor of Design and Computation, and Director of the Aesthetics &

Computation Group (ACG). His work has been featured in the books Design by

Numbers and the just-released Maeda@Media.

Cambridge Forums are free and open to the public. Book signing will follow

program. Open discussion follows speaker presentation. Events are taped

and edited for public radio broadcast throughout the nation. Cassettes

are available. For more info call 617-495-2727.
