Our last Forum featured Professor Anne Higonnet explaining the impact of three French women’s influence not just on dress style but also on independent female thinking – something previously overlooked. It reinforced the principle that knowledge and “facts” about any historical period need to be revisited and reviewed, since so many voices were often ignored or erased!
If you missed the event or want to relish Higonnet’s insightful perspective on the French Revolution, here’s the link.
Our next forum continues our two-part look at Women of Style and Substance on Tuesday, May 21, when we ask WHY DO WE NEED ART MUSEUMS? The program will look at the work and legacy of Isabella Stewart Gardner, with Natalie Dykstra’s assistance. She has written an acclaimed biography of ISG entitled “CHASING BEAUTY”.
Mark your calendars for two events in June which will complete our current CF series. On June 4, we are examining the ramifications of aging in LIVING LONGER, BETTER. We will discuss the many factors that are making this a global issue of concern. It is as much about how the elderly see themselves as it is about how society views them, according to Professor Andrew Scott, an economist from the London Business School and co-founder of The Longevity Forum.
Finally, on June 18 we mark the beginning of summer vacations by debating the merits of PLAYTIME versus SCREENTIME. We are learning more about the detrimental effects of too much screen time on our mental health, and especially our children’s. What we are also gaining is a deeper appreciation of the importance of playtime for all animals, including humans. Two great minds will bat around the evidence including support for the idea of why it is good to be bored.
Dr. Michael Rich, Director of the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital will discuss his research with Professor David Toomey, at U Mass Amherst who has just written a wonderful book on why animals play.
